Surface Finishes

Select between two standard surface finish options for sheet metal parts. Each finish is intended to leave the part safer to handle and ready for immediate use.

Orbital Sander

This is a common finish for sheet metal parts and uses a random orbital sanding process to reduce dross, burr residue, and other surface buildup left from cutting. It is usually better suited to internal components or applications where form, fit, and function are more important than cosmetic appearance.

Straight Grain/Brushed

This finish applies a sanding belt in one consistent direction to create a visible grain pattern on the sheet metal surface. It is commonly selected for cosmetic or customer-facing parts. Grain direction can be specified in several ways:

  • Perpendicular to the longest bend when formed, or to the longest edge when flat
  • Parallel to the longest bend or edge
  • At a 45-degree angle to the longest bend or edge

For welded parts, weld beads can leave a raised area at the joint. Finishing blends that area back into the surrounding metal to create a more uniform edge.
